12 Arrests During Nickelsville Move

Twelve homeless advocates were arrested when they refused to leave the Nickelsville encampment at Port of Seattle’s Terminal 107 Wednesday.

The homeless camp was set up in July and officials issued a 1 p.m. Wednesday deadline for campers to get out. Most left as police arrived but some refused to leave.

Those who were arrested were processed for identification, issued a written trespass warning and released.

Port of Seattle officials said they worked with Nickelsville and community leaders to find safe and legal options for the residents of the camp, which was on port property without permission.

“We're in the difficult situation of understanding the issue of homelessness is a huge issue for our community, but not being able to legally host this encampment," said Charla Skaggs of the Port of Seattle.

After the eviction, encampment organizers announced that St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Seattle would provide a temporary location for the encampment.

The Port of Seattle will store any belongings left behind and encampment members were given information about how to reclaim their property.

Officials said the public park at Terminal 107 will remain closed temporarily while the port's maintenance staff conducts necessary repairs.
