TACOMA, Wash. -- Two food delivery workers were robbed when they were lured to vacant homes by a robbery team in Pierce County, said the Tacoma Police Department.

The latest incident happened Friday night when a man delivering Chinese food was badly beaten in an ambush in south Tacoma, said Officer Mark Fulghum of the Tacoma Police Department.

A woman called the Mandarin Palace, ordered food and asked that it be delivered to an empty apartment.

“She gave the address and she requested that the driver bring change for a hundred dollar bill,” Fulghum said.

The delivery was a trap and when the man arrived with the food he was robbed at gunpoint and beaten, police said.

A witness said they saw the man on the stretcher before he was taken to the hospital.

“His head looked cracked open, everybody thought he was dead,” said witness Natasha Naylor.

It was the second robbery by the same team in a week, Fulghum said.

A woman delivering an order for a Spanaway Pizza Hut was lured to a vacant home on Sept. 23, where she was also robbed, he said.

Her hands were zip tied and the robbery team stole her cash, car and the pizzas.

Police are warning restaurants and delivery workers to be on the lookout for warning signs.

“One, a female making the request to bring change for a hundred dollar bill and secondly when they arrived at both locations, they were both vacant residences,” Fulghum said.

Crime Stoppers of Tacoma and Pierce County is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of this violent hold up team.
