Teens Badly Injured After Homemade Bomb Explodes

One teen lost most of his left hand and two other teens were badly injured when their homemade bomb exploded in a Yelm home.

Earl Palmer, 19, said he and his two friends successfully set off a homemade explosive before the blast that injured all three of them on Saturday morning.

Palmer said his 15-year-old friend was holding the device when it blew up inside his Yelm home.

“He had lost four out of his five fingers," Palmer said. “If it wasn't for me sticking my hand in there to move it partially, he would have lost his entire left hand."

The 15-year-old boy is still at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

When it happened, Palmer said he turned around and hit the floor, but he did not escape injury.

"I'm still having trouble trying to see out of my right eye. My right eardrum is completely blown," he said.

He also has pieces of glass embedded in his body from his face to chest and third-degree burns on his hand when he tried to knock the device out of his friend’s hand.

The other 15-year-old hurt in the blast was also treated at St. Peter's for serious hearing problems and cuts and bruises. He has been released and is recovering at home.

Neighbors said they heard the first blast and were angry that Palmer’s parents didn't put a stop to things right then.

Palmer's father, Doug, said he and his wife were sleeping and didn't hear the first explosion at about 3:30 in the morning.

“That wouldn't have went on period. I don't allow that," Doug Palmer said.

Earl said he hopes others learn from the teens’ mistakes.

"Do not do what we've done," he said.
