Massive Slide Rips Apart SR410, Diverts River Near Naches

A massive landslide Sunday that continues to advance Monday morning along state Route 410 near Naches ripped apart the highway, diverted a river and forced dozens of evacuations.

The state Department of Transportation said the slide, estimated to be a half-mile long, covered the highway with at least 20 feet of dirt and rocks about 10 miles west of Naches in the Nile Valley.

"Where this much earth has moved and covered the highway, moving the river, and that river has covered the county road and 1,500 people are affected, that is a big deal," said Mike Westbay with the DOT.

Of those affected, Westbay said 80 have been evacuated due to fears of flooding. He said there's no way to know how long it will take to get a new road in place.

Home video caught part of the slide on camera and showed debris falling down the face of the hill, splashing as rocks and dirt fell into the river.

The slide has also cut power to about 800 people who live nearby.

One home was heavily damaged and several others sustained some water damage as the river sought a new course around the slide.

No injuries were reported.

It's not known when power will be restored.
