Attorney: 2 Soldiers Jail At Fort Lewis Mistreated

An attorney for two soldiers jailed at Fort Lewis claims they are being mistreated and have even faced sexual humiliation at the hands of female guards.

Sgt. Travis Bishop and Leo Church are two soldiers convicted of going AWOL. They are serving time at the Fort Lewis Regional Correction Facility and their attorney claims they have suffered human rights abuse and sexual humiliation.

“The issue is no matter who are you, you have the right to be treated humanely and fairly in prison and Fort Lewis is not doing that,” said the soldiers’ attorney James Branum.

Branum claims Fort Lewis has illegally monitored phone calls between the soldiers and their legal counsel and that strip searches on the soldiers were in an area where they may have been videotaped by security cameras and watched by female guards.

He also said Bishop and Church faced sexual humiliation because of inappropriate supervision by female guards.

“Fort Lewis is having female guards watch male inmates when they're showering, when they're using the restroom. Not just glancing at them, but at staring at them and making them very uncomfortable,” Branum said.

In response to the allegations, Fort Lewis said phone calls were legally recorded because Branum was not the soldiers’ attorney at the time of the calls.

It said some cameras may have recorded the soldiers being strip searched, but those searches have now been moved to another area out of camera view.

Fort officials contend female guards do not watch strip searches, but do supervise male inmates and may see them in the shower or restroom.

Attorneys for the two soldiers said the response from the Army is not acceptable and a lawsuit could soon be coming. “We're putting them on notice,” Branum said.

Branum said they are preparing a lawsuit now, but said he hopes to work with Fort Lewis officials to resolve their concerns without legal action.
