Bank Robbery Suspect 'John Doe' Identified

Posted: 7:27 am PDT October 14, 2009Updated: 10:15 am PDT October 14, 2009

A bank robbery suspect who refused to tell investigators his name and became known only as John Doe has been positively identified as Michael John Fenter from Port Townsend, police said.

Fenter, who police said was a yacht maker until his business went under, owns and operates the Compass Rose Bed and Breakfast with his wife. He is being held in the Pierce County Jail on charges of robbery, assault and threatening to bomb property.

Fenter is suspected of a series of bank robberies from Seattle to San Francisco.

He was arrested last week after police said he robbed a downtown Tacoma Bank of America branch and left behind a fake bomb that looked so realistic, the bomb squad had to be called in to destroy it.

The suspect was cornered by police detectives and uniformed officers after an employee in the bank dialed 911 during the robbery, police said.

Investigators said the man was carrying a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun and had several more high-powered weapons in his car. Police believe he used the same method to rob a Washington Mutual branch in downtown Seattle in February, causing havoc as a police bomb squad worked to disarm that device. Read the story.

Fenter is believed responsible for the April robbery of a Bank of America in San Francisco and the August robbery of a Wells Fargo in Sacramento, police said.
