Fire Burns Wooden Trestle In Anacortes

A fire has heavily damaged a former railroad trestle that was converted into a footbridge across Fidalgo Bay in Anacortes, Wash.

Anacortes Fire Department Assistant Chief Dan Harju says more than 200 feet of the Tommy Thompson trestle burned Thursday afternoon. The Skagit Valley Herald reports that flames were knocked down by late afternoon and crews were putting out a containment boom to hold back debris and contaminates.

Because of the trestle's remote location, firefighters had to run hoses from a land side fire truck out across the half-mile long trestle, Anacortes Now reported.

The cause of the fire on the 2,000-foot-long trestle was not immediately known.

No injuries were reported.
