A man has been shot to death by Pierce County sheriff's deputies after he reportedly tried to run them down.

Detective Ed Troyer told KIRO 7 that the 30-year-old Spanaway man was being sought on a warrant charging him with assault on a child.

Troyer said that the man reportedly was running other cars off the road Saturday, clipping three with a 1992 Ford Explorer on South Hill, south of Puyallup.

Troyer said deputies stopped the man with a maneuver in which he broadsided a patrol car. Then, the detective said, he backed up, shifted into forward and gunned the engine as he drove toward two deputies who opened fire. The man died at the scene.

Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in law enforcement shootings, KIRO 7 reported.

The Pierce County medical examiner has not released the identity of the deceased man.
