Montana Infant With Flu Dies At Seattle Hospital

Posted: 8:23 am PDT October 19, 2009

A Montana infant has died from complications of the flu after he was flown to Seattle Children's hospital, a Montana television station reported.

The family's daycare provider told KPAX-TV that 7-month-old Conner Hiner-Zavarilli was taken to Community Medical Center in Missoula late last week, and was diagnosed with Influenza A.

He was flown to Seattle in critical condition Friday night when doctors found Conner developed a secondary infection called Streptococcus Pneumoniae Meningitis, and that is what ultimately took his life.

The infant passed away at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Seattle. Family friend Debra Dodge said a fund is being set up for the family for medical costs.

Community Medical Center spokesperson Mary Windecker said the hospital did not believe the child had the H1N1 virus.
