Woman, Man Found Dead In Hot Tub Identified

Signs are pointing to an electrical accident as the cause of the deaths of two people found Sunday in a hot tub at a Federal Way-area home, but one victim's son questions that theory.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday identified the two victims as Karen Rowland, 42, and Paul A. Craig, 59.

The medical examiner's office said it has not yet ruled on the cause of death for either person, but family and friends of Rowland said investigators have told them it was likely an electrical accident.

Craig's son, Josh Craig, said his dad was a home inspector who knew a lot about electricity and plumbing. He said his dad read a book on how to do plumbing and installed the hot tub himself.

“He's had it five years and it hadn't had any problems. It seemed like a reliable hot tub. I've used it plenty of times myself," Josh Craig said.

Josh Craig said his father's body was discovered in the hot tub on Sunday by a friend, who also found Rowland under the water.

Relatives said Craig and Rowland apparently met Friday night at a dance club where Rowland was celebrating her 42nd birthday. The two left and went to Craig’s home in the 34900 block of 26th Avenue South.

"She was a very good person. She was down to earth. She was loving. She was caring. She was a good mother," said Darla Rowland, her sister.

Chopper 7 video showed investigators examining the murky waters of the hot tub.

Investigators said there was no sign of a crime and no obvious cause of death.

The homeowner had a quick wit and loved to tell stories, said Kevin Smith, the man's neighbor of 20 years.

"It makes me sad that he's gone. I feel kind of selfish. This guy, he helped me out so much. A good friend has passed on," Smith said.

The medical examiner will conduct autopsies, and release the cause of death.
