Police Take Over Race Track For Pursuit Training

Dozens of officers practiced driving techniques used in police pursuits at Pacific Raceways in Kent on Monday.

KIRO 7 Morning Anchor Chris Egert was along for the white-knuckle ride as officers raced down the tracks with lights flashing, sirens blaring and engines screaming.

For the next week, 167 police officers from dozens of local agencies will be trained or refreshed on how to handle a pursuit.

Officers acting as criminals sped along straightaways, tight curves and obstacles while other officers followed behind.

The training allows officers to practice decision making that always keeps police in control.

But when there's no other choice, officers may have to engage in what's called a PIT maneuver, or Pursuit Intervention Technique, which involves an officer bumping the suspect's vehicle in a precise manner that causes a vehicle to spin out of control.

The training this week, conducted by the Coalition of Small Police Agencies, also took on another level of difficulty because of Monday's deluge of rain.

But the training is supposed to be as realistic as possible, and roads are usually wet this time of year.
