A Lake Stevens police officer shot and killed a man Sunday night after officers responded to a disturbance call involving a man with a weapon, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Police said a 911 call was placed by someone who said a man who was known to the caller was trying to force his way into a home in the 10400 block of 25th Street Southeast near Lake Stevens.

Authorities said two police officers responded to the call at 8 p.m., entered the home and then an altercation occurred that resulted in one officer fatally shooting a man.

During the investigation that followed the shooting, detectives confirmed there was evidence at the scene that indicated a forced entry was made into the home, police said.

Two handguns were found at the scene, one on the shooting victim's person and one near the victim, police said.

Police are also investigating a report that the man may have had a hammer.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is conducting an investigation at the scene of the shooting.

The Lake Stevens officer involved in the shooting is 23 years old and has been with the department just short of three years.

Investigators are still determining what the relationship was between the deceased man, who was suspected of forcing his way into the home, and the people inside the home, but it is confirmed that they knew each other, police said.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
