Police Say Suspect's DNA Matches That Found At Bombing, Shooting Scenes

Police said DNA evidence found at both the police car bombing scene and the shooting scene where Seattle police officer Tim Brenton was fatally shot matched samples taken from suspect Christopher Monfort.

On Monday afternoon, Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said a military-style knife, American flag and a plastic screw top where found at the maintenance lot where police vehicles were bombed on Oct. 22. DNA samples were extracted from the latter two.

Also found at that scene was a letter which spoke about grievances against bad police officers and government as reasons for police officers' funerals.

Pugel said Monfort had intended to kill officers in the bombings at the Charles Street Service Center and two officers had narrowly escaped exploding police cars.

After the Oct. 31 shooting, DNA was obtained from a stars and stripes patterned bandanna found at that scene.

Police said on Nov. 6, a forensic lab confirmed that DNA samples from both the shooting and bombing scenes matched Monfort's DNA.

After witness descriptions, police car video, and the help of national car expert, police identified the shooting suspect's car to be a Datsun 210.

A tip from a neighbor who told police the owner of such a car had recently covered the vehicle led officers to the Tukwila apartment building where Monfort was confronted and subsequently shot by police Friday.

Police searched his apartment and storage area to find guns, assembled bombs and bomb-making materials.

Pictures taken by detectives showed some of the materials police said Monfort used to blow up and burn several police vehicles.

Some of the bombs had long time delay fuses attached to bottles of gasoline and duct taped to propane canisters with nails tacked on to inflict maximum damage.

Another picture showed the military-style assault rifle police believe Monfort used to kill Brenton last week.

Ballistic tests done on the assault rifle matched bullet fragments found at the shooting scene where Brenton was killed.

Police said Monfort's Datsun 210 has at least one bullet hole from shots fired by Brenton's partner, Britt Sweeney, after Brenton was shot.

Monfort remains under treatment at Harborview Medical Center.
