Cold Front Brings More Snow To Cascades

SEATTLE -- A storm on Friday the 13th brought snow, hail and rain over Western Washington.

Forecasters expect another 1-2 inches to fall in the Cascade foothills Friday night, but as much as 10 inches from Stevens to Snoqualmie Pass because of the Puget Sound convergence zone. The snow level is falling to 1,000 feet Friday night, bringing the chance of snow to the Cascade foothills.The National Weather Service said a cold front that moved through Western Washington Friday brought 3-to-8 inches of snow to the Olympics and Cascades.During Friday’s evening commute, drivers north of Seattle in Everett and Lynnwood had wet snow coming down, making the roadways slushy. Heavy snow also fell in Mukilteo.KIRO 7 Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson said some lightning strikes were spotted near the convergence zone in Forest Glade and also south of Bellingham.At times, heavy snow fell in the mountains and caused reduced visibility for drivers.A KIRO 7 photographer in the North Sound said there was compact snow and ice on Highway 2 near Skykomish. He said crews were plowing Friday morning after a few inches were on the ground.It was also very windy at times on Friday. Wind speeds as high as 57 miles an hour for Whidbey Island.The storm will continue to bring rain and some snow until about 10 p.m. Friday.Stevenson said there will be much calmer conditions overnight, but cold temperatures on the way. With the fresh snow, the Summit at Snoqualmie Pass ski area said it will open Saturday with limited operations.KIRO reporter Richard Thompson was at opening day at White Pass Friday. Most of Saturday will remain dry, but Stevenson said the next system will move in Saturday night, but it will be warmer. She said the next system will just be rain because temperatures will be warmer.
