Hogan's Hot Topic: Motorcycle Vs Car

Motorcyclist and car drivers share the roads but they don't share the same rules. What do you think of motorcyclists on your commute? Do they drive safely? What do you want to tell them? On the other side of the coin motorcyclists what do you want to tell car drivers? What do you see? We went for a ride along with State Patrol to get the rules straight and can't wait to share what we found Tuesday morning on KIRO 7 at 6am. Join in on this hot topic by leaving your comment below.E-mail me, tweet me on twitter, join the discussion on my facebook account OR leave a comment below. What you’re saying? Here are some of the responses on both Twitter and Facebook:Twitter:@ThePoet42: Motorcyclists should obey the traffic laws - go the speed limit and don't tailgate or weave in/out of lanes like they do.@kats2009: Turn them into the cops, and they probably won't do it again...@StvPitts: As a biker to those in four or more wheels... Please don't kill me today. Put down the phone. Wait for the latte. Drive the car@peerless1: when the motorcyclist cuts me off cuz he thinks just cuz he can he should ride between cars and i ride his but for it. he thinks i deserve to be flipped. they complain about sharing the road then don’t.@kayakgal: Tis unfortunate but before moving here I had a motorcycle and routinely rode at 110+ on the interstate. But FL roads are different. not an excuse, but motorcycle speedo's are notoriously inaccurate. Now in FL you can ride w/no helmet. That's just ridiculous@michkap: I once did 150 in a Porsche 911s going across Missouri. I promise to never do it again...@Lane_Bailey: What I'd like to tell motorcyclists -- Pass me, but don't cut me off doing so. I can't stop my 3,000 lb car fast enough.@steveself7: and yet motorcyclists are trying to say that they are safer drivers than those in cars. I've never gone 172 in a car, have you?@NeonMidori: To Motorcyclists, what would your mother say if she knew you were doing that and would she think your life is worth it? :)@brbuss: I once did 13 mph on a tricycle.@sshieldsjr: coming from both sides of this, each party should be courteous, respectful, & pay attention.@GetBusyMom: Car D's-make cons effort to spot the differences(hl, 2w, etc) easy to be lulled by shapes/sizes.MC-VISABILITY/REFLCTIVE GEAR :-)@michkap: channeling Gallagher: "It's the land of 4 wheels out there; if u want 2 drive on 2, u should have to hold hands w/someone else!"@DCinSEA: Need more than 140 characters for that! Just be careful and be aware of each other. Can't we all just get along?@cntrywmn02: I think that if motorcycle riders want respect on the road from others they need to show it by not cutting others off and being dumb. lolFacebook:Steve Self
I would tell them that we often can't see them very well, so be very defensive, and that they have the same speed limit as cars!!Aaron Blank
I'm not a biker but understand the problems from all sides. We need a Motorcycle Occupancy Vehicle lane!Debbie Steele
Remind them that they are NOT bicycles and can not go between cars!!!!! Reminder bicyclers that they are not able to go between cars either, while you are at it...... hahahaEvan Rees
There's always some jerk who messes things up for others. For the most part my friends are careful riders. Recently a friend of mine what hit by a car whose driver decided to make a left turn. The car was in the far right lane. My friend only hurt his arm (fortunately), but the car took off. To car drivers: Stay focused on the road and keep your hands on the wheel.Roy Johnson
I've never really had problems with Motorcycles.. but bicyclists.. they're INSANE. They think they can go anywhere at any time and use up the whole lane even if they've got a bike lane on the side. They slow up traffic and create a huge hazard.Eugean W. Thompson
I had a Suzuki GSX-R600 that I took to 172mph on I-90.New bikes can go faster than you can think. They are also more affordable the cars. It is extremely easy to get into trouble in a split second. Not everyone has the self control to ride a motorcycle safely.Jeffry Marth
There are no more bad motorcycle drivers then there are car drivers. In fact, motorcycle drivers tend to be more courteous compared to other drivers. They are more attentive to what is going on around them.Sean Rosenberger
I'm a daily 520 commuter via motorcycle...I'll second Jeffry's comments..."more attentive" is a good way to stay alive, as a 3500lb car or SUV being steered by an inattentive driver can end you in a split second. And there are plenty of those. What would I tell drivers with four wheels? LOOK! And again...LOOK! Someone in a charcoal Lexus SUV tried to take me out today. Regrettably, not an isolated thing.Tonya Alan Skuse
i love chicks who ride on the back of their bf's sport bikes in short shorts, tank tops & flip flops. smart girls there!Steve Self
we are all ultimately responsible for our own safety, even those on motorcycles.Sean Rosenberger
Oh yes, one more thing for the car/truck/SUV drivers...learn to merge. Really. It's not that hard.Hank Bradley
I do not personally ride a motorcycle. I feel that there are more safe motorcycle riders than there are safe car drivers. How many motorcycle riders do you see using cell phones while driving down I-405 or SR 520? I know that Jenni does not use her cell phone while driving.Matt Slinger
I ride my motorcycle nearly every day. It's only 5 miles to work, but I still almost get hit by a car every day. Most of them are coming from side streets, turning in front of me like I'm not even there--and then only going 5 miles an hour!! Like they were in too big a hurry to wait for me to pass before turning--and then they forgot what the hurry was and left in first gear. Many of them are on cell phones.Evan Rees
Jeffry Marth: I'd agree with you but I've been caught behind a pack of cyclists that thought it's be cool to do wheelies down I-5 at about 3p in Everett.Hank Bradley
Evan - that maybe so. I've been on I-405 with 2-4 cars weaving in and out of traffic racing down the interstate. This has occurred a quite a few times in past couple of months.Matt Slinger
Oh, then again, there was that one dude I saw with one hand on his handlebar and one on his cell phone. I honestly didn't even know it was possible to talk on a handheld cell phone while riding a motorcycle until that day.Geoff Kirk
see a fair amount of folks on motorcycles with shorts or flip flops instead of boots. in general scooter drivers seem worse than regular motorcycle drivers--they tail gate, drive with one hand and in general think they are still in a car. scariest thing I ever saw was someone doing knee stands and jumping from one side to the other of their motorcycle while going over 90 on the I-90 bridgeEvan Rees
I'm not saying Motorcycles are bad, I'd love to ride. I'm saying that there are motorcyclists that make it difficult for drivers to respect them. I've experienced the "racers" too.Hank Bradley
The scariest I saw - one morning commute I glanced at a car next to our van pool. The driver was checking out their cell phone (looking at it) in one hand, the other hand held a coffee and the steering wheel and we were moving at 60 mph down 405.Evan Rees
The bottom line is we should ALL be looking out for what's going on around us on the road. We should ALL be respectful of others. Sadly it's not the case.Hank Bradley
Jenni should do a story on car drivers and their cell phones usage while driving.Mike Sandberg
i am thankful they do not ride between cars like they do in California.Steve Pitts
Flight instructors drilled into me many moons ago, your first responsibility is to fly the plane. Well, when riding or driving the same goes. Your first responsibility is to drive or ride. EVERYTHING ELSE CAN WAIT. Pay attention! Been riding for 30+ years, so far I'm still alive keeping the thought that everyone on the road can kill me today, including me.Evan Rees
Amen Steve.Rich Palmer
Motorcycles and their riders are at large a very conscientious and safe group. They know and realize they can not be seen. They drive defensively because the drivers of cars, trucks etc. do not see or know they are there. Loud pipes help. They have caught my attention at times. As with any form of transportation you have to look out for yourself.Jesse Stohrer
Done both, A majority of Motorcycles are very safe. They seem to be well trained and very defensive. I think the car drivers need to remove their heads. WAY TOO MUCH MULTI-TASKING. When switching lanes on the freeway try and move your head. I don't care how good of a mirror setup you have you need to move your head for the whole picture. Get up to the speed of traffic on the ramp that’s what they’re there for. If you’re in the fast lane and someone is approaching from behind move over and let them by. I can’t count the number of times I have seen the slow lane faster than the fast lane. It’s part of the team concept, for me to do my best I need to know what you are going to do.Thanks for joining in on this hot topic!Jenni Hogan
