Viaduct Crash Sends Debris Falling To Street Below

SEATTLE -- A collision on the Alaskan Way Viaduct sent debris from the structure's guardrail to the street below this afternoon.Police told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News a car spun out and hit the guardrail at about 1 p.m. About an hour later, a parking enforcement officer below the viaduct notified the Seattle Department of Transportation that debris fell onto Yelser Avenue and Alaskan Way.
SLIDESHOW: Viaduct Guardrail Damaged In CollisionAn SDOT representative said part of the northbound viaduct lanes at Yelser would be closed from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Video from Chopper 7 just before 3 p.m. showed traffic moving smoothly through the area in both directions.The area below the incident is taped off.No one was hurt.The Seattle City Council voted unanimously last month to authorize the Washington Department of Transportation and the city to move forward with a deep bored tunnel to replacing the aging viaduct. The agreement outlines Seattle’s $927 million obligation to the project set for completion in 2018.
