150-Year-Old Irish Shillelagh Missing

A 150-year-old Irish club, known as a shillelagh, is missing after it was left inside an SUV overnight.

The traditional Irish club was brought to Seattle by Irish immigrants in 1859 from County Wicklow in Ireland.

It was last seen by Society of the Friends of St. Patrick president Mike McQuaid late Tuesday night.

McQuaid left the three-foot stick made of blackthorn wood in the back of his SUV late Tuesday night after returning from a St. Patrick’s Day planning meeting. On Wednesday morning, he discovered it was missing.

Part of a seven-decade Irish tradition in Seattle, the shillelagh is believed to be the oldest in the Pacific Northwest.

It is not insured, and the St. Patrick's Day parade is Saturday.

Anyone with information about the shillelagh is asked to contact the Irish Heritage Club at 206-223-3608.

Members of the Friends of St. Patrick are offering a reward for the shillelagh’s return, with no questions asked, but are waiting until Thursday to file a police report in case the missing club is part of a prank.
