Burglary Suspect Arrested For Allegedly Ramming Deputy's Car In Puyallup

Pierce County sheriff's deputies arrested a man early today after he allegedly prowled South Hill homes, rammed a patrol car and jumped over fences in an attempt to escape officers.

The 25-year-old man was bitten by a police dog and suffered a leg injury, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said. He's been booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault, felony eluding and residential burglary.

Deputies were called just after 2 a.m. today. Callers reported that a man was prowling cars and stealing in the Sunrise development area off South Hill, Troyer said.

A deputy responded to the area and spotted a potential suspect driving a Crown Victoria in the area of 139th Avenue East and 168th Street East. The deputy got behind the car and waited for other deputies to arrive.

The suspect took off, Troyer said. Less than a minute later, the suspect drove down a dead end road and turned the car around. He rammed the deputy's patrol car at 171st Street East and 139th Avenue East. The car continued on, going through neighborhoods off 122nd Avenue East.

The suspect went down a long driveway in the 11800 block of 164th Street East, crashed through a gate and went into a field, Troyer said. The car crashed into a tree and the driver ran. He was seen jumping over fences and going through backyards, Troyer said.

A police dog conducted a track and located the man after several minutes, Troyer said. The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of his wounds.

The deputy was not injured. The patrol car had a flat tire and sustained damage to its front end, push bar and passenger side headlight.

Inside the suspect's vehicle, deputies spotted stolen property. The vehicle was towed to the South Hill precinct so investigators could get a warrant to search it more thoroughly.
