TACOMA, Wash. -- The man who admitted to killing an armored car guard during a robbery at a Lakewood Walmart last summer was sentenced to life in prison without release Friday.

Calvin Finley pleaded guilty in July to aggravated first-degree murder for fatally shooting Loomis armored car guard Kurt Husted on June 2.

Prosecutors said Finley killed Husted as he carried a money bag containing $60,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in checks out of a bank branch at a Lakewood Wal-Mart.

A customer in the store was also shot but survived.

Finley was supposed to be sentenced in January but a surprise motion by defense attorneys postponed the sentencing until Friday.

During the sentencing, Husted’s fiancée and sister addressed the court and Finley.

“You shattered our lives, but you shattered your own and your family and all those people who love you, you have also hurt,” said Husted’s, fiancée Deborah Bishop.

Husted's sister, Kirsten Talley, praised her brother for being a mentor and father figure for her two sons.

Talley wept uncontrollably as she told the court she was waiting for a phone call from Husted the day he died, congratulating her on her birthday.

“He was murdered on my birthday. Now instead of celebrating that day, we were waiting in a hospital to find out what happened to my brother. They came and told us my brother won't be joining us, that he died at the scene,” Talley said.

Finley refused an opportunity to address the court as Judge Frederick Fleming sentenced him to life in prison without release, plus 25 years.

Prosecutors charged four others in the robbery: Walmart employee Tonie Marie Williams-Irby, Marshawn Turbin, Turbin's girlfriend, Brittney Marie Maas-Baines and Odies Walker.

Maas-Baines, 19, was sentenced to six months for rendering criminal assistance. A one-year sentence on a count of obstructing law enforcement was suspended on conditions that she cooperate with law enforcement .

The other three were charged with murder.
