King County Calls Meeting On Tent City Plan

King County has called a meeting Tuesday in Bothell to explain plans to locate a tent city for the homeless in a neighborhood between Bothell and Kirkland.

Discussion

The meeting will be hosted by King County Executive Ron Sims, who is running for governor.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bothell, at 10207 NE 183 St.

A meeting last week drew hundreds of neighbors angry that they had been given little notice of plans for the homeless tent city in their neighborhood.

As a result, the county delayed the opening of the tent city until next Monday.

Two Bothell churches have offered their property for the tent city, but organizers in the Share-Wheel group of Seattle declined.

A representative of the Share-Wheel group, Anitra Freeman said "Letting people win by throwing temper tantrums is never a good idea."

She said "homelessness is a community problem" and should not be sloughed off on churches. Share-Wheel plans a camp for about 100 people for 90 days.

A similar camp has been moving around church properties in Seattle.
