Two Climbers Rescued From Mount Rainier
![]() |
MOUNT RAINIER -- A helicopter has flown two stranded climbers off
Mount Rainier. 44-year-old Al Hancock of Fort McMurray, Alberta,
and 48-year-old Bruce Penn of Connecticut called for help Thursday
while descending from the ten thousand-670-foot level of the
challenging Liberty Ridge route.
They said they were unhurt but
"in over their heads." Rangers held off going after the men,
because rescuers had to focus on recovering the body of Luke
Casady, a climber killed on the same route and looking for his
climbing partner, Ansel Vizcaya, who remains missing and is
presumed dead.
Hancock and Penn will be debriefed today at the Longmire Ranger
station.
