The Pierce County medical examiner's office said Frank Jackson, 84, died from injures suffered in the fall.

At least one of the people who survived was listed in critical condition at Tacoma General Hospital.

As many as 16 people were on the second-story deck when it dropped 12 feet to the ground during a going-away party for a Navy recruit.

The deck was added to the house in 1995 by a contractor, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported. It was nailed rather than bolted to the home.

A Pacific Lutheran University student was killed in Feb. 2001 when a deck crowded with students came crashing down. That deck was built without a permit.
