An Auburn father is in trouble with the law after allegedly locking his 4-year-old son in a hot car, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

It was 86 degrees on Aug. 7, when Xiang Ding went inside an Office Depot for an hour and left the boy locked in a van, police said. The van was parked in the shade.

"He was extremely sweaty, crying, upset. The officer said that his clothing was drenched. The officer immediately gave him some water and the child actually lunged after the water," Auburn police Sgt. Bill Pierson said.

Ding told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News he didn't know what he did was a crime.

Ding faces a charge of third-degree criminal mistreatment and could face a year behind bars and a $5,000 fine.
