UPDATED: 2:05 pm PDT September 27, 2005

It's about to be illegal to throw most electronic equipment into the trash in King County.

Starting Saturday, King County residents won't be able to dump computers, monitors, TVs, laptops and cell phones at transfer stations or into household garbage cans. Included in the ban are products containing mercury, such as "button" batteries, florescent light bulbs, and mercury switches.

Instead, people will have to take such electronic items to local businesses.

For computers, monitors, laptops, cell phones and televisions, contact a business in the "Take It Back Network." Go to the Take It Back Network Web site for more details.

For fluorescent bulbs and tubes, go to productstewardship.net or http://www.govlink.org/hazwaste/house/products/list.cfm.

For thermostats, go to the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program In King County.

For other products that contain mercury, go to this hazardous waste disposal sites Web site.
