Local Charities See Drop In Giving Due To 'Compassion Fatigue'

Posted: 3:53 pm PDT October 12, 2005

Local charities say donations are down compared to a year ago due to "compassion fatigue" in the wake of several international disasters, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

After the Tsunami disaster in December 2004 and the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region in September, local people opened their wallets to help. Then came last weekend's earthquake in Pakistan.

Officials with local charities report donations are lower because donors have run out of money.

At Seattle's Union Gospel Mission, donations are down 40 percent over a year ago.

You can contribute to the Mission through its Web site, http://www.ugm.org/.

The Pakistan Association of Greater Seattle is taking donations. The group can be reached through its Web site at http://www.pakistanseattle.com.
