Falling Metal Knocks Bengals Fan Unconscious

Woman Hit In Back Of Head

Updated: 10:06 am PST January 10, 2006

A 49-year-old Bengals fan had to miss Sunday's playoff game after she was struck in the head by a piece of metal that fell off a building.

Angela Simons, of Fort Thomas, Ky., was walking toward Paul Brown Stadium when she was struck in the back of the head by the 6-by-10-foot sheet of metal, which fell from the top of the National City Bank building.

"We were walking down Vine Street and talking, and the next thing I remember was waking up on the pavement with people around me," Simons said.

She was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

"I have two fractures in my neck, two broken ribs and stitches in the back my head," she said. "If it had hit a child, I can't imagine what would have happened."

The city inspector said the metal was left loose on the building's roof, and the bank said a gust of wind probably blew it off. The National Weather Service reported winds of about 25 mph with gusts of almost 40 mph Sunday afternoon.
