3.3 Earthquake Felt Across Northwest

Posted: 6:08 pm PST February 2, 2006Updated: 9:40 am PST February 3, 2006

A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 occurred late Thursday afternoon under the south end of Whidbey Island.

The University of Washington seismology center says the quake occurred about 5:48pm, about nine miles west of Everett and 25 miles north of Seattle.

University of Washington Seismology Lab Coordinator, Bill Steele, says the quake was widely felt because of its relatively shallow depth of about 19 miles.

The state Department of Transportation is making checks Thursday night of bridges in the Everett area. Such checks are routine after earthquakes of magnitude three or higher.

Because the Transportation Department received reports that people felt the earthquake in Seattle, inspectors also plan to check the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which has instruments to measure whether the elevated highway has moved.

People who felt the earthquake called the KIRO 7 newsroom from Camano Island, Everett, Queen Anne Hill, Arlington, and Port Ludlow.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.
