A 25-year-old Kirkland man who tried to jump from a stopped elevator car died Monday when he fell five stories down the elevator's shaft at Lincoln Square, a new shopping center in the heart of downtown Bellevue.

The King County medical examiner’s office identified the man as Jeremy Johnson. An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday morning.

The accident happened at about 8 p.m. Monday when an elevator servicing the mall's parking garage became stuck between floors. The passengers on board pried the doors open and began exiting out the bottom half of the elevator.

Fire Lt. Bruce Kroon said four people were able to safely get out, but Johnson fell backward down the shaft and was killed.

This is the second elevator accident at Lincoln Square. Three workers were seriously injured when an elevator fell 60 feet during the construction of the huge complex in June 2002.
