Capitol Hill Memorial Grows

More than three days after six young people were gunned down, people are coming to the Capitol Hill neighborhood where the shooting took place to pay their respects. The memorial is growing by the hour.

Brandon Akin stayed overnight at the memorial Monday. Candles, flowers and letters surround the memorial.

"Once the names were released it kind of hit home, so I just came out here," said Akin. Akin told KIRO that being at the memorial is the least he can do.

"It’s not really real until you look at the house and realize my friends were in there, and it’s because of some guy. I don’t know what he was thinking. I don’t know what his reason was, but whatever it was, he took a lot of innocent lives -- I mean some of them were just kids," said Akin.

Others at the memorial said it wouldn't surprise them if the shooter was invited to the party without really knowing anyone there. The rave community is accepting of everyone, they said.

Akin said that despite the carnage early Saturday, that acceptance won't likely change.

"People are maybe going to be a little more selective, but I don't see it happening because we're all so friendly; we love everyone," said Akin.

A public memorial service was planned at 6 p.m. Tuesday for the victims of Saturday's shooting. The Church Council of Greater Seattle held what it calls a "service of hope" outside the Capitol Hill house at 2112 East Republican Street. After the service, the neighborhood association planned a community meeting at Miller Community Center at 330 19th Avenue East.
