Mudslide Stops Passenger Trains

Posted: 7:11 am PDT April 18, 2006Updated: 10:24 am PDT April 18, 2006

A mudslide that hit railroad tracks south of Everett about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday was cleared by 8:30 a.m., but passenger trains are canceled in the area Tuesday and Wednesday.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said freight trains are running again, but Amtrak and Sound transit trains between Seattle and Everett won't be running until Thursday morning.

Melonas said mud, rock and five trees slid off a 100-foot bluff about 5:30 a.m. south of Everett. The slide was about 100 feet long and four feet deep.

Melonas said the railroad has heavy equipment nearby for a quick cleanup.

He said engineers are still looking for the cause of the slide.

Sound Transit reminds commuters that its Tacoma-Seattle Sounder train are running normally.
