Puppies Mistakenly Euthanized

The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is conducting an internal investigation after five puppies were mistakenly euthanized.

The animals were "put down" less than six hours after a good Samaritan dropped them off at the shelter.

The mixed-breed puppies had apparently escaped from a home in Tacoma. They were found several streets away and were dropped off at the William Gazecki animal shelter just after 3:30 p.m. last Friday. By 9 p.m. they were dead.

The owner of the dogs, Greg Stillwell, said he had hoped to find good homes for the puppies. He plans to sell the six remaining puppies from the litter.

The case comes at a time when the Humane Society is working hard at becoming a no-kill shelter by the end of 2008.

In January, officials unveiled an ad campaign to get people to spay and neuter their pets.
