Injured Boys Promote Pedestrian Safety

A Seattle boy struck while crossing the street one year ago returned on Wednesday to the crosswalk where he was hit to bring attention to the issue of pedestrian safety.

Dominick May-Douglass, 12, suffered brain damage when a car struck him while he was walking in a crosswalk on Stone Way North at North 41st Street.

"He doesn't want other kids to be hit," said Desiree Douglass, his mother. "He talks about that, you know -- that we can't keep doing this, it's not right, that we drive as if our job is more important than someone else's life."

Feet First, a nonprofit group promoting pedestrian safety, organized the event, which included another boy struck while walking in a Seattle crosswalk.

Nick Messenger was hit while crossing a street in Crown Hill in February 2005.

Nick, who still can't walk, suffered traumatic brain injuries.

"I just wish they'd slow down and pay attention to what is going on around them," said Jennifer Messenger, Nick's mother. "Our lives will never be the same again."
