Homeowner Finds Alleged Killer Hiding In Bedroom

Dona Smith woke up around 5 a.m. to watch World Cup Soccer when she noticed Aris, her 4-year-old Pomeranian, was acting very strangely.

With the help of her dog, Smith, a Bellevue woman, discovered a man hiding behind a closet door in her guest bedroom Tuesday. After she called police, she learned the man was a murder suspect that Bellevue police had spent hours looking for in connection with a killing late last night just five blocks away.

The dog was sniffing at a closed bedroom door upstairs and started whimpering.

When Smith opened the door and looked inside, she saw that the bed looked as if someone had been sleeping in it. She then saw the shoulder of the person who had been sleeping there, hiding behind a closet door.

“He was standing right there,” said Smith.

Smith ran outside and flagged down a police car for help. A SWAT team entered the home and the man was found inside and arrested.

Smith told KIRO 7 she now believes the man crawled onto her roof and through the window last night after the alleged murder.

She said she remembers her dog, Aris, barking around 10 p.m., but she just went to bed.

Smith said the thought of a killer inside her house for hours terrifies her, and has made her thankful for her little dog.

The search for the alleged killer started when police responding to an altercation in the 1300 block of 144th Street Southeast in Bellevue around 10 p.m. Monday found a dying man.

The victim was rushed to Harborview Medical Center where he later died.
