Dispatch Tapes Released From Trooper Shooting

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelly Kalmbach was shot five times when she pulled over Jack Sonntag on suspicion of drunken driving.

Investigators said Kalmbach, 47, stopped a Lincoln Town Car near a service station on state Route 7 near Spanaway to determine whether the driver was intoxicated. Authorities said the driver got out of the car and was being put through a field sobriety test when a scuffle developed.

Kalmbach radioed for back up, “645 Tacoma, send me another unit, I’m trying, unable to get one in custody for DUI.”

“She went to handcuff him, and he resisted and pushed her back, then ran to his car and got his gun and started shooting at her,” said Laure Rowsey, an eyewitness.

Within seconds, Sonntag had pulled a gun and shot Kalmbach.

“Send another car. I’ve been shot,” Kalmbach radioed to dispatch. “645 advising, 645 has been shot.”

Kalmbach was able to fire a few shots, but was shot five times before the suspect got into his car and drove off.

Kalmbach was shot four times in the leg and once in the left arm.

A short while later, police said Sonntag stopped his Lincoln Town Car and was approached by Pierce County Sheriff's deputies.

“They told him numerous times to stop. He wouldn’t comply. Instead, he reached in and pulled out a handgun, and our deputies shot him,” said Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer.

Sonntag died of his injuries, and Kalmbach is now recuperating at Madigan Army Hospital after coming out of surgery. She is expected to recover.
