Mail Stolen From Seattle Post Office

Posted: 8:04 am PDT August 25, 2006Updated: 9:00 am PDT August 25, 2006

The U.S. Postal Service said it will investigate security at a post office on Capitol Hill following a KIRO 7 Eyewitness News report that transients stole mail from unattended bins on a loading dock.

Veteran postal employees said mail containing names, addresses and other personal information is frequently stolen and their requests to increase security have been ignored.

In an incident earlier this month, a Seattle police officer allegedly caught two men in the act of stealing mail. When questioned, the suspects admitted to stealing mail before, according to a police report obtained by KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Postal employees said thieves backed up trucks to the loading dock area, hauling away bags of packages.

A trash bin outside the loading dock contained credit card applications, mileage plan statements and other letters. Postal employees said it was undeliverable mail that was discarded.
