Truck Crashes Into Sammamish River

Posted: 11:55 am PDT August 30, 2006Updated: 12:38 pm PDT August 30, 2006

A semi-trailer exiting from S.R. 520 went out of control and overturned Wednesday in the Sammamish River in Redmond.

The collision occurred on West Lake Sammamish Parkway Northeast at the bottom of the exit from eastbound SR 520. Washington State Department of Transportation workers closed the exit and said it could be hours before it is reopened.

The truck landed nearly upside down. Its load and fuel floated down the river.

The driver and passenger were trapped inside the smashed cab, but they escaped.

The passenger was taken by helicopter to a hospital, but there was no immediate word on his condition.

WSDOT officials said it could take crews several hours to clear the scene and conduct an investigation. Drivers should find alternate exits.

Witnesses said the driver of the truck, which was full of produce and salmon, tried to hit the breaks several times. They said the truck became airborne and fell about 50 or 60 feet straight down through the T in the road.

The Sammamish River Trail is closed at Marymoor Park.
