Victim Recovering Following Jewish Center Shooting

POSTED: 12:04 pm PDT September 12, 2006
UPDATED: 12:30 pm PDT September 12, 2006

A victim of the shooting rampage at the Jewish Federation building July 28 spoke Tuesday about her recovery following the ordeal, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Seattle resident Layla Bush, 23, was hospitalized for gunshot wounds after she was shot during the violent spree.

Bush was working the reception desk on the day the gunman walked in, made threats and opened fire, killing one and injuring several others.

A first shot hit her shoulder. A second bullet pierced her abdomen, went through her stomach and lacerated her liver. It also struck her pancreas, spleen, caused one of her kidneys to fail, bruised her aorta, shattered a vertebra and caused spinal nerve damage.

That bullet is still lodged against Bush's spine, but doctors said removing it could cause more trauma.

After weeks in intensive care and several surgeries, Bush remains at Harborview Medical Center but can now walk on her own.

“To me, it’s easy to keep a positive attitude, and every day I see that improvement and just think ‘Well, when I go home, it’s just going to keep getting better,’” said Bush.

Bush said she remembers lying on the ground, waiting for medics to arrive and praying the shooter wouldn’t come back again.

As she continues to heal, Bush said she feels the emotional scars seem to slowly be fading away as well.

“I feel like now I have something in my life that’s really impacted me, and I really have to discover a lot of how it’s changed me. It really has made me realize, ‘wow, life is short.’ You have to live every moment for what it is. I really have been enjoying my time and it really makes me think, ‘you know, I really have to appreciate what I have.’”

Bush is in satisfactory condition and continues to receive rehabilitation.
