DIRECTOR, NEWS TECHNOLOGY
Job Description:
The Director of News Technology is responsible for providing the advancement, leadership, process optimization, and strategic direction of the technical operations for the newsroom and the CMG station group. As a key member of the newsroom leadership team this person will liaise closely with local station News and Engineering Management, various CMG properties as well as CMG VP, Technical Operations to define, plan, assist with budgeting and implementation of technical strategies for the news operations.
Attributes for this position:
Proven experience in managing news operations in a leadership role including equipment, budget, personnel and technology systems management in digital newsroom and production environments as well as field operations.
The ability to communicate and implement excellent customer service is a must. Must be able to articulate clearly across various skill-set audiences. Proficiencies in generating and presenting various reports and presentations across multiple disciplines and management levels.
Responsibilities:
Establish and implement short and long-range technical systems and operating procedures for the local news department, various CMG properties and Corporate directives. Manage and plan project and operating budget expense lines. Work closely with Engineering to plan, coordinate and implement news-related systems.
Perform administrative duties on all key newsroom computer software systems. Implement and assure backup staffing in these areas. Work closely with CMG Digital groups, both at the local station in addition to CMG-D Corporate, to innovate newsroom and web-based initiatives as well as new ventures.
Keep abreast of state-of-the-art developments through attendance at trade shows and seminars. Provide frequent updates to Corporate management on successes, trials and evaluations of burgeoning Newsroom and field technologies.
Newsroom editors, photographers, truck operators and E.N.G. Receive operators will report to this position as well as the responsibility of administration of their compensation, scheduling, performance reviews, training and development.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have at least five years of hands-on experience in news acquisition, editing, journalistic, assignment desk and on-air production functions in a newsroom of similar market size. Market diversity is highly desired.
Broad knowledge of news ENG acquisition, editorial, assignment desk and control room technologies. Experience in major enterprise-level technology and engineering construction or renovation projects is desirable.
Education:
The candidate should have a degree in technology with a focus in electronic media. Factory training on Newsroom systems is a plus.
Reporting Structure:
This position reports to the News Director with Corporate responsibilities to the VP, Technical Operations.
NEWS PRODUCER
KIRO-TV has an immediate opening for a creative, dynamic producer to join our news staff. This person must be able to take charge of a newscast, make strong news decisions and be able to coordinate many live shots and handle breaking news like a pro. This producer must be flexible and be able to write strong copy for TV and the web if necessary, coordinate with reporters and produce a newscast that is showcased. KIRO-TV is looking for an experienced anchor for its morning newscasts. An anchor at this station must be able to drive the KIRO-TV brand from the news desk. The job also requires excellent reporting talents including researching and writing stories. Candidates must have strong on-air presentation skills, communication skills, and live reporting skills. Must be a good story teller. Must be strong in covering and presenting breaking news. Must have a minimum of three years news anchor and reporting experience. VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER
The VP & General Manager provides leadership in the planning, organizing and controlling of all Seattle TV departments and maintains continually improving service to our internal and external customers while achieving optimum performance in ratings sales, revenue market share, profits and profit margins and operating within the core values of the company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL
1. To carry out all corporate policies and objectives within all activities related to Seattle TV.
2. Effectively manage the Seattle P&L.
3. Develop and maintain management systems which will consistently improve quality, planning and coordination.
4. Maintain an atmosphere conducive to excellence in all organizational activities.
5. Conduct all supervisory duties in accordance with Washington EEO policies.
6. Support the CMG Mission and Values and to represent CMG in a highly professional manner.
7. Manage associated businesses, such as internet, in a way that optimizes the audience base and revenue potential.
SPECIFIC
1. Select and train an effective group of department heads.
2. Establish goals and objectives in collaboration with management and the GVP; to make periodic comparisons of actual performance to established goals & objectives.
3. Conduct regular, documented performance reviews with all management, quantifying accomplishments as compared to established objectives.
4. Keep the Group Vice President informed on all major issues that might affect the attainment of objectives by KIRO TV.
5. Keep all staff members informed on all Seattle TV activities that might affect the performance of their departments.
6. Approve all new employee hires and terminations, pay increases, and disciplinary actions.
7. Assume responsibility for all financial expenditures and cost control systems within supervised departments.
8. Maintain the FCC license application filing system consistent with FCC Rules and Regulations.
9. Supervise the preparation of budgets for all departments.
10. Serve as a representative for Seattle management whenever requested/needed.
11 Travel, when necessary, to attend network, Cox, client and industry association meetings.
12. Work closely with CMG Human Resources to be familiar with and to insure that all supervisors within every department are conversant in the relevant personnel policies and procedures.
13. Complete other projects as requested or needed.
While prior Television Station management is preferred it is not required. Strong leadership themes, business acumen and interpersonal skills are considered to be essential in the performance of this job. FILL-IN ASSIGNMENT EDITOR
This individual will be responsible for overnight, day and/or night assignment desk news coverage, especially breaking news. The Assignment Editor will be a dynamic and energetic person who can help manage the news gathering process from the Assignment Desk. The person should break news stories, develop sources and communicate clearly. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: monitoring scanners, answering newsroom phones, making calls to people involved in news stories, dispatching field crews, and assisting other newsroom staff. The assignment editor is required to write and post breaking news stories to the newsroom website, KIROTV.COM. The assignment editor must work well with other managers in achieving newsroom goals. Qualified applicants must demonstrate leadership. Other requirements include the ability to multi-task, strong computer skills, good news judgment, and ability to clearly communicate. Experience on major market assignment desk and some college is preferred. Knowledge of the Puget Sound region’s geography, politics and history is a definite plus.
FREELANCE REPORTER
KIRO-TV seeks an experienced, enterprising and energetic hard-news reporter on a freelance basis. This seasoned journalist will join a newsroom that emphasizes breaking news, daily investigative reporting and severe weather coverage. We’re looking for a reporter who has ideas, digs for extra information, writes well, loves “live” and expects to win. The reporter should also be hungry to use new technology to present stories and the journalist should be adept at using social media to gather and break stories. Previous reporting experience required. The freelance reporter should be available to work any shift and should be available on weekends and holidays. FREELANCE RETAIL SERVICES WRITER/PRODUCER
The primary role of the Retail Services Writer/Producer is to write and produce commercials . This individual will also produce Public Affairs projects, various Local Programming Department projects and news promotion as assigned. Additional duties will include graphics production and both live and pre-produced television show production. Must have strong business relation skills and work well with News Department, Sales Department and retail clients. Reports to Creative Services Director. Ideal candidate will have five years of experience as a retail commercial producer and be skilled commercial production, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. BA in Communications or Telecommunications preferred.
ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE
KIRO-TV is looking to hire experienced performers in our multi-media world of television, digital television, internet and mobile. This leader will help develop creative and scalable solutions that leverage and maintain our media portfolio. Have a solutions-oriented attitude and passion to win. Be an expert problem solver. Be able to understand relationships and communicate internally and externally across the organization. Be skilled at creating & delivering presentations in front of large groups and one-on-one with key decision-makers. Candidate must be able to adapt to new technology, handle campaign reporting, exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, be an organized planner and be goal-oriented. This position is responsible for developing new advertisers and increasing share of business for existing advertisers. Knowledge of agency structure and ratings negotiation is a plus. Experience with OSI, Matrix, TVB, AdMall and OneDomain are preferred. College degree with minimum two years related experience preferably in media sales or related business.
PART-TIME MASTER CONTROL OPERATOR
This position requires expert knowledge of the overall television stations from an operational standpoint. Responsibilities include the programming and operation of the following: the M/C automation system, FCC program logs and transmitter logging equipment, video switchers, audio mixers, various tape formats, camera control systems, broadcast computer networks, video router control, program and commercial prep stations, and basic IT understanding. Requires the ability to communicate well with the CBS and RTV Television Networks as needed, as well as with the Traffic, News, Promotion and Sales departments. All applicants need to be aware of their role in notifying the Engineering Department of all intermittent problems as well as complete equipment failures which require repair and especially any issues that are likely to affect KIRO’s on-air product.
Qualified applicant will have a minimum of 2 years experience in a commercial TV environment and a college degree. Must have the ability to lift 50 plus pounds, work in confined areas and have the willingness to work all shifts including holidays, as needed. Must have the ability to work well both independently as well as in a team environment
