SPANAWAY, Wash. —
A pickup truck packed with seven people rolled over and crashed into a stand of trees, killing a woman and injuring six other young adults early Friday morning in the Spanaway area.
The pickup left the road, crashed through a fence and flipped over along 22nd Avenue East near 208th, between Spanaway and Frederickson near the Roy Y.
Deputies at the scene told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois that they were surprised the six survivors weren't more seriously injured or killed.
"I just kept hearing screaming, and it sounded like people were in there," said Shirley Finley, who was awake when the truck came barreling toward her home around 6 a.m.
A few trees were the only things that stopped the truck from slamming into Finley's room.
The crash woke up her neighbor, Johnny, who ran to help and found seven people stuck inside.
"Tried my best to save the people I can," Johnny said.
He cut himself getting through the window to help.
"I had to bust it out with a pole so everybody could get out to safety, but when I saw that young girl, just..."
A woman who was in the back seat of the pickup was dead.
The others suffered various injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
Police think the driver was speeding and may have been drunk.
