10 Million Gallons Of Sewage Spill Into Elliott Bay

SEATTLE —

Nearly 10 million gallons of sewage went into Elliott Bay Monday night after the West Point Treatment Plant overflowed, said the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.

Employees were preparing the treatment plant for high levels due to rain Monday night when the wrong gate was activated.

Sewage spilled into Elliott Bay for three hours before operators were able to stop it at 1 a.m. The beach was closed and water quality samples were taken.

Employees from the county's environmental lab will monitor water quality in the area for the next several days.

An investigation has begun into what caused the overflow at the Magnolia plant.
