2 Yelm Teens Critically Hurt In Head-On Crash

YELM, Wash. —

A head-on crash in Thurston County critically injured two 16-year-old girls who were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

A hospital spokeswoman said Skye Calhoun, the driver, is in critical condition and Alexandria Bachmeier is in serious condition.

Washington State Patrol trooper Brandy Kessler said the crash happened at 7 a.m. on Morris Road just south of 110th Avenue in Yelm.

Calhoun was heading northbound on Morris Road in her 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass, driving at a speed too fast for the wet road conditions, when she crossed over the center line while coming around a curve in the road and hit a 2003 GMC box -type truck head on, Kessler said.

Both girls were airlifted with non-life threatening critical injuries. They are both expected to recover, the State Patrol said.

KIRO 7 reporter Richard Thompson said the two girls were on their way to Yelm High School when the crash occurred.

The driver of the GMC, 43 year old Matthew L. Benson of McKenna, was not hurt in the crash.

The road was closed while an investigation of the scene was conducted.
