3 Students Arrested In Alleged School Bomb Plot

Police Say Group Planned To Take Over School With Weapons, Bombs

TACOMA, Wash. —

Three students at Spanaway Lake High School have been arrested in what police said was a plot to take over the school with weapons and bombs, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

The three teens, two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old, were arrested Monday following an investigation by the Tacoma Joint Terrorism Task Force, which included officers from the Tacoma Police Department, the sheriff's office and the FBI. All three are members of the Junior ROTC, the sheriff's office said.

In several searches conducted in the Spanaway area, police found school plans and notes laying out details of the group's alleged plot. Detectives were investigating the possibility of a "hit list," the sheriff's office said.

Authorities said the suspects said their motives included revenge for years of teasing and "to effect government change," a statement from the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said detectives believe the suspects had not obtained weapons and that any attack would not have been carried out for up to two years.

Security will be stepped up on campus, but officials said there was no longer any danger to students.

Up to nine others, including some middle school students, may have been involved in an anti-government group at the school but were unaware of the school takeover plan, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Superintendent Thomas Seigel planned to send a letter about the case home with students.
