AUBURN, Wash. —
A four-alarm fire destroyed or damaged 80 units at a storage facility in Auburn Wednesday night, the Valley Regional Fire Authority said -- way up from the intitially reported 14 units.
As investigators continued to work Thursday evening to figure out what caused the fire, people who rent units feared for what may have become of their belongings.
“It’s all sentimental, it’s all my babies’ stuff,” said Shellyne Provost, who waited outside Auburn Way Self Storage. “(There’s) stuff I’m leaving my kids – files, pictures – my mom’s stuff that – she passed away – that I have.”
Renters weren’t allowed inside as investigators combed through the damage.
Provost said she learned of the fire Thursday morning. It started at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the facility, located at 4500 Auburn Way North.
Firefighters arriving at the scene saw smoke, and they quickly discovered more than one unit was ablaze. They took a defensive approach, attacking the fire in each unit separately, said Kelly Williams with the the Fire Authority. Because it was warm outside, firefighters were rotated in to fight the flames.
One firefighter was treated for a finger injury.
Provost said she fears she also lost several of her uncle’s rare guitars from the 1960s that were stored in her unit.
“They’re one of a kind, made by my uncle, Harvey Thomas,” she said.
A Google search turned up several photos of Thomas’ guitars. They were made locally, and were uniquely shaped.
Provost said one in her unit was made for John Lennon.
“I’ve been praying for the weight to get off my shoulders,” she said. “I’ve been carrying them around for 30 years, but I didn’t pray for them to go up in flames. I meant to put them in a museum or do something with them.”
Provost said fire officials told her she won’t be able to get into the unit until Friday morning.
