Accused Child Molester Caught, Arrested

OAK HARBOR, Wash. —

According to authorities, 60-year-old John Edward Cowan was arrested and booked into jail Wednesday afternoon after failing to appear in court Tuesday.

Cowan is charged with molesting a young girl for two years.

“How many other little girls has he done this to? He convinced my daughter, who I thought trusted me completely, never to say anything to me,” the girl’s mother said.

Cowan was a trusted family friend of the girl’s family.

“She’s really withdrawn, she doesn’t play outside, she doesn’t want to go to the store anymore, she doesn’t even come out in the living room at home, she’s always in her room,” her mother said about the little girl.

Detectives showed KIRO 7 Eyewitness News guns seized from Cowan’s home and $10,000 worth of methamphetamine alongside other drugs.

“Ths man commited some horrible crimes, he posted bail to get out and the fled, didn’t come back for his court hearing, so that makes him a danger to the community,” Detective Ed Wallace with the Island County Sheriff’s Office said.

“He's the one who told me to trust people again, and have faith in people and so I did and he put my daughter in a prison in her own skin,” the girls mother said.

The judge set Cowan’s bail at $500,000.
