Air Quality Warning In Effect As Fire Burns In Shoreline

SHORELINE, Wash. —

An air quality warning remains in effect Friday as a fire that has been burning for days continues to smolder in Shoreline.

The fire erupted on Wednesday's record-breaking 103-degree day on an island in the middle of Lake Ballinger.

Since then, crews from Snohomish County Fire District 1 have been working to douse the fire on the 3-acre peat bog island.

Officials said the fire is mostly underground except for occasional flare ups, but other fires burning in the area have contributed to the lingering smoky haze.

Lake Ballinger Park remains closed indefinitely and authorities said the fire could smolder for days.

Despite the health warnings, the hazy air has been responsible for some beautiful sunsets.

The air stagnation advisory expires at 6 p.m. Friday.
