Are The Enhanced Bottled Waters Worth It?

SEATTLE —

Bottled water is a hot controversy in the Northwest where our local tap water is considered some of the safest and best-tasting in the entire country. That controversy is extending to a different kind of bottled beverage, enhanced water.

Advertisers spent more than $200 million last year promoting bottled water and now there are many new enhanced waters that have everything from herbs to vitamins and even protein blended in.

VIDEO: Is Enhanced Bottled Water Worth The Cost And Calories?

KIRO 7 has taken a look to find out what you're getting in enhanced water, and whether it's worth the extra cost and calories.

Water now plays host to calcium, electrolytes, herbs and even weight-loss ingredients. Some vitamin enhanced waters are enhanced with 125 calories a bottle. That’s a lot of calories if you have to do 300 pushups to work that off.

Well, not really. Despite what a Propel Fit ad says, you wouldn't normally do pushups to burn calories.

You are seeing more and more enhanced waters on the shelves. Metromint Chocolate Mint Water says its turned water into chocolate. Aquamantra says it is infused with mantras: I am lucky, I am healthy, and I am loved are the titles on the water bottles.

Kellogg’s Special K20 protein water even says it has five grams of protein and can be used as a dietary exchange for one serving of very lean meat or meat substitute. These fancy waters aren’t cheap.

Consumer Reports' Jamie Hirsh asked ten of the bottled waters manufacturers what’s wrong with just plain old water?

"Pepsi-Cola which makes Aquafina Alive said consumers are now looking for water that multitasks. And Kellogg’s which makes Special K20 Protein Water said that consumers are looking for easy, portable ways to add more protein to their diets," Hirsh said.

While the ads for enhanced waters keep coming, drinking tap water is a lot cheaper and a lot better for the environment.

More than 22 billion plastic water bottles are thrown out each year, so drinking less bottled water is a greener option. As for how far the enhanced water craze has gone -- well, it’s literally gone to the dogs. A company called Fortifido says it’s going to be coming out with enhanced bottled water for canines.

The City of Seattle is taking steps to lessen the use of bottled water.

Last May, Mayor Nickels toasted a report on the high quality of Seattle's drinking water by hoisting a glass of tap water and in March he signed an executive order banning the purchase of bottled water by city departments.
