ATM Theft Attempt Caught On Tape

LACEY, Wash. —

Bold crooks broke into a Lacey store, wrapped chains around a cash machine and tried to pull it away with a vehicle overnight Wednesday.

Video: Surveillance Tape Of ATM Theft Attempt

Police are hoping surveillance video will help catch the burglars before they strike again.

Store owner Suk Kang watched the surveillance tape showing the break-in.

"Oh my God," he said.

The thieves pulled the ATM, smashing it. One man came back into the store quickly, gathered cash and fled.

"They had a plan ahead of time and were pretty aggressive and knew what they were doing and were in and out in less than a minute," said Capt. Dan Kimball of the Thurston County Sheriff's Department.

In that minute they did a lot of damage.

Customers were amazed the front wall was ripped loose, windows and doors destroyed.

Mark Ivanoff is regular customer and a carpenter. He was helping his friend clean up the mess the thieves left behind.

"It messed up the wall pretty good, nothing structural wise though," he said.

Deputies arrived on the scene, guns draw, just minutes after the theft, but the suspects were gone.

Now detectives hope someone will recognize the suspect in the surveillance video and call police before the bandits strike again.
