Auburn Bible Class Teacher Charged With Child Rape

AUBURN, Wash. —

A 49-year-old Bible class teacher was charged with third-degree child rape Monday, accused of having sex with a teenage student who attends the Auburn Adventist Academy where the teacher worked for two years, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Investigators believe Scott Spies began a sexual relationship with the girl last August. Police said the sexual activity between the two started when the girl was 15 years old. She is now 16.

Spies is also charged with sexual misconduct with a minor for allegedly using his position as a teacher in order to have sex with the student, charging documents said.

Probable cause documents said a school faculty member learned of the alleged sexual relationship between the student and Spies from students who said they had heard the two were having sex.

Court documents said Spies eventually admitted to detectives that he had sex with the girl about 15 times.

The victim told police she and Spies had sex at Spies' home during weekends or extended school breaks and also had sex two times in Spies' office at the school, probable cause documents said.

The school’s principal, Dr. Marvin Mitchell, said teachers are instructed to always have their office doors open, especially when meeting with a female student.

Court documents said the victim said the last time she had sex with Spies was Feb. 14.

Spies was fired from his job last week.

Mitchell said counseling is being offered to all 300 students and that they are asking every female student if they have anything to report regarding this incident. He said he only knows of one student being allegedly victimized and said the faculty is in disbelief.

"No one would expect one of their coworkers or colleagues to have this kind of an issue," Mitchell said.

Mitchell said they do an extensive background check before hiring any faculty or staff and that Spies had no criminal record.

Spies bailed out of jail at the King County Regional Justice Center Saturday.
