Avalanche Closes I-90 Near Snoqualmie Pass

I-90 Closed Again Near Snoqualmie Pass

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. —

For the second day in a row, avalanches closed Interstate 90 near Snoqualmie Pass Sunday evening, the state Department of Transportation said.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of the state's main artery through the Cascade Mountains were closed indefinitely at 5:40 p.m. because of two avalanches, the DOT said. One avalanches fell on the westside of the freeway at mile post 51 and the other on the eastside of I-90 at mile post 58.

The highway was closed from North Bend to Ellensburg and DOT officials had no idea when it would reopen.

There were no injuries or damage to vehicles, according to the State Patrol.

An avalanche early Saturday shut down I-90 between North Bend and Cle Elum for nearly five hours.

Saturday's avalanche occurred around 5 a.m. near mile post 58, east of the Snoqualmie Summit, state Department of Transportation said. Crews with snow plows worked to clear the road and lanes were reopened by 10 a.m.

There were no reports of injuries.

DOT advised drivers to carry chains when going over the passes and to not use cruise control or overdrive.
