NEW YORK —

The wife of U.S. Army Sergeant Robert Bales told CBS This Morning that she stands behind her husband and believes he's innocent in the massacre of Afghan civilians.

Robert Bales is the sole suspect in the shooting deaths of 16 civilians on March 11.

His wife, Kari, said she sees him twice a week, but refuses to ask him whether he's guilty.

"I just don't need to ask him.  I know my husband, and it's really not a question I need to ask.  I know him. I know what he's capable of and what he's not capable of, so I don't need to ask the question."

When asked what life would be like if her husband were to be found guilty, Bales said, "At this point I haven't gotten that far. I truly believe that my husband did not do this. I really just want the facts to come out through the fair trial."

Bales believes the truth of what happened will come out at trial. She said initial details of what happened were "very confusing and didn't make a lot of sense." "They were sensationalized," she said. "A lot of untruths about me and my husband, our life. So it makes it hard to believe anything that came out."
